Many of us love to play fantasy sports, as it gives us a chance to play GM and compile a team of all-stars to dominate friends and family each year.
But we like to take it a step further - what if you could compile a team made from any baseball players, real, imaginary, long-gone...
If you could pick an ultimate squad that you could trot onto the field to decide the fate of Earth, who would it be?
Pitcher - Henry Rowengartner (Rookie of the Year)
Let's be honest. The kid can throw 103 mph heaters consistently and absolutely torch unsuspecting batters due to his canon-like arm. We love this pick because he brings overwhelming domination combined with the inevitable fact that the competition will underestimate his ability. If you had to face a twelve year old kid, what would you think?
Catcher - Yogi Berra
"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
We certainly came to a fork in the road while trying pick a catcher that can handle the Rookie of the Year, but if we have to reach back in to the annals of time, we are taking all-time legend Yogi Berra to get the job done. With an amazing stat line and some of the best one-liners in history, there is no question that Yogi Berra gets the call to don the mask.
Third Base - Mike Schmidt
I don't think there is any question that Michael Jack Schmidt is playing third base for team Seed Sack. Is there even a contender that can challenge him for the position? Time and time again Schmidt proved that he is the king of the hot corner during his time with the Phillies, leading them to a World Series Title in 1980. This might have been the easiest selection by far.
Short Stop - Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez (The Sandlot)
The Jet can play any position due to his incredible athleticism, but we are plugging him into the short stop position to take advantage of his speed and agility. He can run faster and jump higher than anyone around and has the mustache to back it up. If team Seed Sack ever gets caught in a pickle, we know the odds are in our favor with Benny on the field.
Second Base - Jackie Robinson
There are few men that have contributed as much to the game as Jackie Robinson. His sheer presence on the field would inspire and lift our team to new heights. A six-time all-star and World Series champion, Jackie Robinson is a one of a kind legend that deserves his place in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
First Base - Lou Gehrig
Here's another no-brainer. The "Iron Horse" played in a then-record 2,130 consecutive games (which was passed by Cal Ripken Jr.). Although Gehrig is mostly known by the disease that took his life, his accomplishments in the world of baseball are simply stunning. He had 23 career grand slams!
Left Field - Ted Williams
Arguably one of the greatest baseball players of all time, Ted Williams is a household name. In his 19 year career, he managed a .344 average, 521 homers, 1839 RBIs, 1798 runs scored, 2654 base hits, 525 doubles, a .482 on base percentage and a .634 slugging percentage. Those are eye-popping stats that simply cannot be denied!
Center Field - Willie "Mays" Hayes (Major League)
OK, so maybe the guy can't hit very well, but we have already stacked this team with sluggers. If you are going to be playing center field, you need speed to cover some serious ground. We need a prolific base stealer on this squad so for that reason we summon Willie "Mays" Hayes to get the job done.
Right Field - Babe Ruth
It's basically impossible to have an ultimate team without Babe Ruth. Nuff' said.
Relief Pitchers - Mariano Rivera, Ricky Vaughn (Major League)
If you want consistency and reliability out of the pen, then we will without a doubt take Mariano Rivera. If we need intimidation and cutoff sleeves, Ricky Vaughn gets the call. Either way, we like our options.
Coach - Jimmy Dugan (A League of Their Own)
Sometimes you need a man that has experience with a real cast of characters, among other things. The Seed Sack all-star team could probably manage itself, but we will add Jimmy to the dugout to keep things in line.
So there you have it, our all time fantasy baseball team!
If you have an all-time team, please list it in the comments below.
If your team is already full of shining-stars, then make sure everyone has a Seed Sack in their pocket when they take the field!
